Ashcroft Guest House is located in the Northumberland town of Haltwhistle - known as
"The Centre of Britain" due its geographical position within the British Isles. It is an excellent base for exploring the local area with many historic attractions and some fantastic walking / cycling to be had nearby.

The famous Roman Wall - Hadrians Wall - marking the Northern border of the former Roman Empire, is only 1.5 miles away to the North and the local area is full of history and unspoiled scenery. The recognised "best" parts of the Roman Wall are near to Haltwhistle.

The town itself is surrounded by stunning countryside with great walking opportunities locally whatever standard you enjoy.

From Haltwhistle there are bus and train routes east towards the market town of Hexham, historic Corbridge and the city of Newcastle with its shops, restaurants, etc. To the west, Brampton and the historic city of Carlisle with its Castle, Cathedral and Tullie House (Border Reivers) Museum, as well as its excellent shopping and restaurants, is also well worth a visit.

Several major walking routes such as the Hadrian's Wall Path Trail and the Pennine Way pass through the area, as well as cycle routes such as the Coast to Coast (C2C) and the Hadrian's Wall Cycle Way (South Shields to Ravenglass).

The Eden Valley is also just a few minutes drive away with superb fishing and quiet, easy walks by the river.

Or perhaps water sports such as dinghy sailing, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing are your thing? If so, these are all available locally at Talkin Tarn Country Park. Fishing is also allowed at the tarn.

Local villages such as Gilsland, Greenhead and Bardon Mill offer a quiet alternative to the town itself and are within short driving distance of Haltwhistle. Or if you want to escape even more, the peaceful North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is close by too.

We are also only 1 hour's drive from Ullswater in the Lake District National Park.

The market town itself offers good shopping facilities, traditional country inns and restaurants. We are always happy to give advice on all the best places to visit. In Summer, there is a super leisure centre with outdoor swimming and children's play areas.

Whether it is walking, cycling, horse riding, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing or mountain biking, there is always something for everyone in the Haltwhistle area of Northumberland.
